Greenbelt is a city in Prince Georges County, MD, US. Contained within todays City of Greenbelt is the historic, planned community now known locally as "Old Greenbelt" and designated as the Greenbelt Historic District

Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, helped Tugwell lay out the town on a site that had formerly consisted largely of tobacco fields.

Cooperatives in Greenbelt include the Greenbelt News Review, Greenbelt Consumers Coop grocery store, the New Deal Cafe, and the cooperative forming the downtown core of original housing, Greenbelt Homes Incorporated (GHI).

Much of the community is located within the Greenbelt Historic District; listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980

Greenbelt, which provided affordable housing for federal government workers, was one of three "green" towns planned in 1935 by Rexford Guy Tugwell, head of the United States Resettlement Administration, under authority of the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act.

Greenbelt Road is a portion of State Highway 193, a highway connecting several suburban towns, with links to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and to the nations capital.

The Goddard Space Flight Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is located there, as is Greenbelt Park. The Greenbelt Arts Center is located in Old Greenbelt.

Labor Day is a US federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September.

The holiday originated in Canada out of labor disputes ("Nine-Hour Movement") first in Hamilton, then in Toronto, Canada in the 1870s, which resulted in a Trade Union Act which legalized and protected union activity in 1872 in Canada. The parades held in support of the Nine-Hour Movement and the printers strike led to an annual celebration in Canada. In 1882, American labor leader Peter J. McGuire witnessed one of these labor festivals in Toronto. Inspired from Canadian events in Toronto, he returned to New York and organized the first American "labor day" on September 5 of the same year.

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parades. Speeches or political demonstrations are more low-key than May 1 Labour Day celebrations in most countries, although events held by labor organizations often feature political themes and appearances by candidates for office, especially in election years.

Unity through community involvement

Welcome to the 55th Annual Greenbelt Labor Day Festival. The City of Greenbelt is honored to host this unique community celebration, which is the largest event of its kind in the State of Maryland and provides so much enjoyment to all its citizens. Many family and friends reunions occur during this special weekend. The Festival also provides a wonderful opportunity for many of our citys non-profit, service and religious organizations to participate and make themselves known to our residents and visitors.

The Greenbelt Labor Day Festival was started in 1955 as a way of raising funds to build a Youth Center. It has been held every year since.

This Festival is organized and conducted by an independent volunteer group, the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival Committee. These dedicated citizens have worked long hours this past year to ensure that we all have a wonderful time. They are grateful for their efforts and those of all the other community volunteers and City employees who make this event possible.

We hope you enjoy this weekends festivities. Plan to come to all 4 days and take full advantage of the wide range of activities being offered, from the opening ceremony and concert Friday evening to the Labor Day Parade on Monday. If you have any questions about the City of Greenbelt, please call us at 301-474-8000.
