Located off I-95, just southeast of Baltimores Inner Harbor, the start shaped Fort McHenry was designed by a Frenchman named Jean Foncin and named after James McHenry who served as Secretary of War from 1796 to 1800.

Battle of Baltimore - Fort McHenry successfully staved off the British invasion of Baltimore by sea while the Battle of North Point was fought on land.

It is a tradition that when a new flag is designed for use by the US, it is first flown over Fort McHenry, over the same ramparts referred to in the National Anthem.


Birthplace of the National Anthem

O say can you see, by the dawns early light, a large red, white and blue banner? Whose broad stripes and bright stars . . . Were so gallantly streaming over the star-shaped Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore, September 13-14, 1814. The valiant defense of the fort by 1,000 dedicated Americans inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner.
