The Maryland State Fair is the annual state fair for the state of Maryland. It is held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds located near the intersection of York and Timonium Roads in Timonium. The fair is an 11-day event customarily beginning in late August and ending around Labor Day.

The first fair was held in 1878 and was known as the Lutherville Fair. The following year, 1879, the fair was moved to its current location in Timonium and was held from Sept 9 through Sept 12. In 1906, the Lutherville Fair merged with the Pimlico Fair and became known as the Maryland State Fair. The fair was suspended from 1943 through 1945 during World War II. In 1999, the fair grew to its current length of 11 days.

The early years at the Fair saw tents and wooden structures in use to exhibit home arts, farm and garden products, and livestock shows. Plowing and working oxen competitions were some of the popular but few attractions. Races were held at the track, and results were forwarded to interested horsemen at Baltimore and Alexandria, VA, by way of carrier pigeon. Food concessions consisted of sandwiches made by the farmers wives, and amusements involved sideshows, sack races, and greased pole climbing.

The Timonium Race Track is home to Live Thoroughbred Horseracing. Post Time is 1 PM each day. The 5/8th mile oval, which overlooks scenic York Road, will simulcast racing (for Delaware, Calder, Saratoga and Meadowlands) every day(see web site).

Birthing Center - Location: Cow Palace - If you come visit the birthing center, you just may see the birth of live animals!

Swifty Swine Racing Pigs - 12:30pm, 2:30pm, 4:30pm, 6:30pm and 8pm.

Masters Of The Chainsaw - Masters of the Chainsaw is a limited group of the nations top professional chainsaw sculptors. At a typical show, from behind protective netting, onlookers will observe an original and captivating high-energy performance. Monday through Friday - 1:30pm, 3:30pm and 7pm; Sat and Sun - 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 5:30pm and 7:30pm.

Agricultural Fair Tours - Located in the Cow Palace at the Birthing Center.
The Agricultural Fair Tours hosted daily by The University of Maryland in cooperation with the Maryland State Fair will provide factual and fun answers to fairgoers questions about all aspects of agriculture.

Milk It Yourself - Maryland Guernsey Youth Association will teach fairgoers how to hand milk cows during their Guernsey Milk Clinic fundraiser.

Vehicle access gates are located on York Road between Padonia and Timonium Roads and on Timonium Road about 1/4 mile east of Interstate 83 and just past the Light Rail tracks. Vehicles can enter using either of these gates without restrictions at Fairground events during most of the year.

The Timonium Light Rail Stop is located a short walk from the entrance to the Fairgrounds near the Cow Palace. The MTA No. 9 bus line also serves the Timonium Park and Ride/Light Rail Stop.

Limited parking is available on the Fairgrounds for little fee. Free parking is available at the Park and Ride location on Deereco Road west of the Fairgrounds. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Handicapped parking is available.

Mon through Fri - Open 12noon to 10pm
Sat, Sun and Mon - Open 10am to 10 pm
Midway Hours: Open 10 am (weekends and Monday, September 7th) / Open 12 noon (weekdays).

LABOR DAY RIDE SPECIAL: Fairgoers pay an amount for a ride wristband, to ride an unlimited number of rides from 10AM to 10PM on Labor Day. Fair admission is not included.
