This year marks the 150th anniversary of the -Great Quake- of 1868 on the Hayward Fault. On Sunday, 10/21, the City of Fremont, nonprofit Math Science Nucleus (MSN), and various geological organizations hosted an earthquake awareness event in Central Park. Joined them from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for walking tours along the new Earthquake Walk and a variety of fun, hands-on activities for families to learn more about earthquake science, history, and preparedness! Parents and adults will be able to bring home a wealth of information on how best to prepare for earthquakes and enjoy some interesting exhibits. The U.S. Geological Survey called our own Hayward Fault the most likely to be the source of the Bay Areas next big quake with a one-in-three chance of a magnitude 6.7 rupture in the next 30 years. The admonition -Be Prepared- has never been so important.

The Hayward Fault Zone is a geologic fault zone capable of generating destructive earthquakes. This fault is about 74 mi (119 km) long, situated mainly along the western base of the hills on the east side of San Francisco Bay. It runs through densely populated areas, including Richmond, El Cerrito, Berkeley, Oakland, San Leandro, Castro Valley, Hayward, Union City, Fremont, and San Jose.
